SCIATIC BACK INSTRUCTION FOR PEOPLE WITH  LOW BACK DISCOMFORT

YOU MUST RETAIN YOUR LORDOSIS AT ALL TIMES (LORDOSIS IS THE HOLLOW IN THE LOWER BACK). ANY ACTIVITY WHICH INCORPORATES BENDING FORWARD, AS IN TOUCHING THE TOES,WILL ONLY CAUSE FURTHER WAEKING AND INJURY TO SOFT TISSUES OF THE SPINE.

 

SITTING

>>SIT AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE AND THEN ONLY FOR SHORT PERIODS.

>>YOU MUST MAINTAIN YOUR LORDOSIS AT ALL TIMES.  THIS CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED BY PLACING A SUPPORTIVE ROLL IN THE SMALL OF THE BACK. THE ROLL SHOULD BE 3 TO 4 INCHES IN DIAMETER. IT SHOULD ONLY COMPRESS  1 ½  INCHES.

>>IF YOU HAVE A CHOICE, SIT ON A FIRM, HIGH CHAIR WITH STRAIGHT BACK. AVOID LOW,SOFT COUCHES OR DEEP SEATED CHAIRS.

>>YOU SHOULD NEVER SIT WITH YOUR LEGS STRAIGHT OUT IN FRONT OF YOU, AS THE CASE WHEN SITTING IN BED,, the bath, or on the floor, this position will force you to lose your lordosis.

>>WHEN GETTING UP FROM SITING,YOU MUST MAINTAIN YOUR LORDOSIS. SCOOT TO THE FRONT OF THE CHAIR,STAND UP BY STRAIGHTENING YOUR LEGS,AVOID BENDING FORWARD AT THE WAIST.

>> POOR SITTING POSTURES ARE CERTAIN TO KEEP YOU IN PAIN OR MAKE IT WORST.

BENDING FORWARD

AVOID ACTIVITIES WHICH REQUIRE FORWARD BENDING OR STOOPING AS THIS WILL FORCE YOU TO LOSE YOUR LORDOSIS.

LYING

>>A GOOD FIRM SUPPORT IS USUALLY DESIRABLE WHEN LYING.

>>A SUPPORTIVE ROLL MAY BE NECESSARY TO HELP DECREASE PAIN WHILE SLEEPING.  YOUR THERAPIST WILL INSTRUCT YOU ON HOW TO USE THIS ROLL IF NECESSARY.

>>WHEN RISING FROM LYING,YOU MUST RETAIN YOUR LORDOSIS; TURN TO ONE SIDE, DRAW BOTH KNEES UP AND DROP THE FEET OVER THE EDGE OF THE BED.  SIT UP BY PUSHING YOURSELF UP WITH YOUR HANDS AND AVOID BENDING FORWARD AT THE WAIST.
